What is the golden ratio?

The golden ratio (also called phi, written as φ, value 1.618) is a proportion that appears throughout nature, classical architecture and Renaissance painting. When the ratio of two dimensions equals 1 : 1.618, the result is naturally pleasing to the eye — used by designers since the Parthenon was built.

How to use this calculator

1. Enter any dimension you have — a wall length, a sofa width, an artwork height.
2. The calculator returns both the shorter pair (your value ÷ 1.618) and the longer pair (your value × 1.618).
3. Use either result for the matching dimension — coffee table length, console height, art frame ratio, etc.

Common applications in interior design

• Room proportions — a 12 ft wide room feels right at 19.4 ft long (12 × 1.618).
• Sofa & coffee table — coffee table length should be ~62% of sofa length.
• Frame ratios — picture frames at 1:1.618 (e.g. 30 cm × 48 cm) feel naturally balanced.
• Furniture grouping — divide a wall in 38:62 to position the focal point.
• Wall composition — picture or panelling widths in 1.618 ratio create a calm rhythm.

The 38 : 62 split rule

Instead of placing furniture or art at the centre of a wall (the 50:50 split), divide it at 38% from one end. The eye reads this asymmetric placement as more dynamic and considered than dead-centre — it's the same trick used in Renaissance composition.
