How tile quantity is calculated
Calculate the area to be tiled, divide by the area of one tile, then add wastage for cuts at edges, breakage and pattern matching.
Formula: Tiles = ⌈(Area ÷ Tile area) × (1 + waste%)⌉

Tile selection tips
- Smaller tiles (300×300) give better grip in wet areas — required by code in many bathrooms.
- Larger tiles (600+) mean fewer grout lines and a cleaner, more spacious look.
- Always buy from one batch — colour and pattern can vary slightly between manufacturing runs.
- Buy 1–2 extra tiles per box beyond the calculated amount, for future repairs or replacements.

How many tiles for a 100 sqft floor?
For a 100 sqft floor with 2×2 ft (4 sqft) tiles you need about 28 tiles including 10% wastage. With 1×1 ft tiles you need ~110 tiles for the same area.
How much tile wastage should I add?
Standard wastage is 10% for straight-laid floor tiles. Add 15% for diagonal layouts and 20% for patterned or large-format tiles where breakage during cutting is more common.
What size tile is best for small rooms?
Larger tiles (24×24 inch / 600×600 mm) make small rooms feel bigger because there are fewer grout lines. For very small bathrooms (under 40 sqft), 12×24 inch tiles laid lengthways work well.
Should I buy more tiles than calculated?
Yes — always keep 2–4 extra tiles beyond your wastage amount. They're invaluable for future repairs and the same batch may be discontinued by the time you need replacements.
